about

Peter Philips (c. 1560–1628)

Although born and educated in England, Peter Phillips spent most of his adult life in the Netherlands. In 1612, Phillip's first major collection of sacred music was published in Antwerp. Cantiones Sacrae... for five voices brings together sixty-nine settings 'for the principal feasts of the whole year, and the common of the saints', and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The two motets sung here are Elegi abjectus esse, which sets a text from Psalm 83, and the marian hymn Alma Redemptoris mater. This hymn is one of four seasonal antiphons traditionally sung at the end of Compline.

lyrics

Elegi abjectus esse in domo Dei mei,
magis quam habitare in tabernaculis peccatorum.

Quia misericordiam et veritatem diligit Deus:
gratiam et gloriam dabit Dominus.
