about

Arnold Bax (1883 – 1953)

Arnold Bax's setting of the 15th century carol I sing of a Maiden was published in 1923, and dedicated to the influential Scottish musician John Blackwood McEwen. McEwen studied at the University of Glasgow and in 1947 donated a large number of manuscripts to the university, and founded the McEwen Bequest to promote and encourage the performance of music by composers of Scottish birth and descent.

lyrics

l sing of a maiden that is makeless
King ofall kings to her son she ches.
I sing of a maiden that is makeless
King of all kings to her son she ches.

He came all so still.
There his mother was
Like Dew in April
That falleth on the grass.

He came all so still
To his mother’s bower
Like Dew in April
That falleth on the grass.

He came all so still
There his mother lay
Like Dew in April
That falleth on the grass.

Mother and maiden was never none but she,
Well may such a Lady God’s mother be.
I sing of a maiden that is makeless
King of all kings to her son she ches.
