Frederick Rimmer (1914 – 98)

Frederick Rimmer spent nearly thirty years at Glasgow University Music Dept., and his gifts as organist and choral director came to the fore in his work in the University Chapel. An able administrator, he also played an important part in the encouragement of contemporary music in Scotland. A man of enormous nervous energy, he always seemed to be in a hurry, and the drive of his personality was clearly heard in this his most popular work, the anthem "Sing we merrily" a setting of verses from Psalm 81 for choir and organ. Though serial in construction, it was memorable, and easily within the capabilities of the Chapel Choir for whom it was written.

Sing we merrily unto God our strength;
make a cheerful noise unto the God of Jacob.

Take the psalm, bring hither the tabret:
the merry harp with the lute.

Blow up the trumpet in the new moon:
even in the time appointed, and upon
our solemn feast day.

For this was made a statute for Israel:
and a law of the God of Jacob.
