Robin Orr (1909 – 2006)

Though born in Brechin in 1909, Robin Orr spent most of his working life south of the Border. As Director of Music at St. John's College, Cambridge both before and after WW2, it was appropriate that his first post-war anthem - They that put their trust - was composed in memoriam the members of that College, who had perished in the conflict. A setting of verses from Psalm 125, it was written in traditional Anglican manner, with subtle modulations that coloured the anthem's sombre mood. Professor of Music at Glasgow University from 1956, Orr's other important Scottish contributions included founder chairmanship of Scottish Opera from 1961.

from this time forth for evermore.
